Japanese Denim 101

sm1.jpg
Not long ago Japanese denim used to be a niche product, however message boards such as Superfuture and StyleForum seem to be spreading the message into the mainsteam. If you want to find out what all the fuss is about then check out this introductory article from AskMen.com. The only problem is that until recently it was quite a challenge to actually buy these jeans anywhere outside of Japan. Luckily, in the last few months a couple of stores in the US have finally started stocking the best in Japanese jeans. Blue In Green of New York and Self Edge Of San Franciso are currently selling hard to find brands such as Studio D'Artisan, Warehouse, Samurai and Pure Blue. And for those of you that don't live near either of those shops you can alway try eBay.

Lindsay Lohan & Her Denim Shorts

26.jpg
Lindsay Lohan can't get enough of denim shorts at the moment. In the last week she has been seen out in no less than three different pairs. In the photo above she is seen leaving the gym in a slouchy pair of Siwy Denim Camilla Shorts. A couple of days later she wore a different more dressed up pair of shorts to the Genetic Denim First Anniversary Party. The same pair also appeared in a Terry Richarson photoshoot for GQ. And in the final picture below she carrying a copy of Vogue and wearing what looks like a homemade pair of cut offs.

House Of Cassette Skinny Jeans

hoc7.jpg
House Of Cassette is a brand new denim label set up by a chap named Peter James Lee, previously Creative Director for Hudson Jeans. Launching a new jeans brand is a brave move in what is already a dangerously over-populated marketplace, however I think HoC are going to do pretty well for themselves. These jeans may come from LA but they have little in common with most of the other faded, over embellished jeans produced in that part of the world. HoC say they are making jeans for skinny guys and cute girls that like dive bars and the colour black. These are lean, mean jeans which I can see going down well with indie kids. Look out for them, coming to skinny hipsters legs near you soon.

Celebrity Denim Overdose - Genetic Denim

gd3.jpg
It doesn't take a genius to work out that if you are a new denim brand the best way to ensure maximum publicity is to get some Hollywood hottie to squeeze herself into your jeans. Genetic Denim took this principle to its logical conclusion and invited a boatload of celebrity party girls to their One Year Anniversary Party. Guests included Jamie-Lynn Sigler of The Sopranos (see above), Ashlee Simpson, Michelle Trachtenberg, Kristin Cavallari and inevitably Lindsay Lohan. There is something about this company that doesn't quite ring true, they actually seem more like a party company that makes a few jeans rather than a jeans company that throws the occasional party. Even their own website has more photos of the parties they have thrown than the jeans they have produced - which must tell you something.

Designer Q & A - Fidelity Denim

jasonFID.jpg
This week's Designer Q&A is with Jason Trotzuk, Founder, Designer and President of Fidelity Denim.

1) Why do you think after 200 years jeans are still one of the most popular items of clothing.

Jeans have remained the most popular because they are the clothing for the common man, the working man, therefore they are real and credible...jeans never lie!!!

2) Last time I counted there were over 50 brands of premium denim jeans, what makes your jeans stand out from the rest.
Fidelity, is the "new luxury" in denim, Fidelity works from the three "F” principal; Fabric Fit and Finish...I use the best fabrics that will keep up with her busy day, the fits must accent her assets and the finishes are soft and subtle so that they work with everything in her wardrobe. Easy to say, difficult to do, "If you look at my jeans and take them for a spin, you’ll fall in love" - that’s Fidelity baby!

3) Who do you imagine is your typical customer.
Today’s woman: Bold, bright, energetic, risk taker, zest for love and life!!!

4) Which style and wash of your jeans are flying out of the shops the quickest at the moment?
Belladonna (mid rise), Japan Rose (skinny flare), Plumaria, (skinny)
