Denim Crimes - Scarlett Johansson

Like many people when I watched Lost In Translation I fell in love with Scarlett Johansson or at least the character she played. Since then I pretty much she figured she could do no wrong (although let's not mention The Island). However there is no forgiving the horrendous pair of high-waisted jeans that she modelled at an Imitation Of Christ catwalk show. It just goes to show that the wrong pair of jeans can even make one of the most beautiful women in the world look dumpy and ordinary.

Siwy Jeans - Celeb Favourite

Siwy Jeans have only been going for a 18 months but the celebrity following they have built up in that time is already pretty substantial. Recent converts to these figure hugging jeans include Rachel Bilson seen above in Siwy Rose Drainpipes and Kate Moss in Siwy Black Hannah Slip Crops. You can get an even better idea of how well these jeans fit from this promotional video and if you are interested in how they are made then this video shows the amount of work that goes into creating each pair of jeans.

Designer Q & A - April 77

This week's Q & A is with Brice Partouche, Designer of April 77 Jeans.

1) Why do you think after 200 years jeans are still one of the most popular items of clothing.

Because of the American Levi’s imperialism !

2) Last time I counted there were over 50 brands of premium denim jeans, what makes April 77 Jeans stand out from the rest.

April 77 is not a jeans brand. We sell an attitude and we make jeans just because it fits with our inspiration, with the music we love. All the jeans are unisex.The other point is the price: April 77 is an affordable label , don’t pay our jeans more than 150 dollars.

3) Who do you imagine is a typical April 77 customer.

Musicians and people into any underground scenes.

4) Which style and wash of April 77 Jeans are flying out of the shops the quickest at the moment?

All of April 77 jeans are in raw denim. Our best seller is The Joey in Overdrive (raw blue denim) and in High Standard (black drill).

5) Are there any essential jeans that everyone should have in their wardrobe.

Levi’s 501 and 505. We have made like a 505, The Sinner, which is a skinny jeans for dads!

6) What are the first pair of jeans you remember?

A Bonaventure with back metal label. I was 10 I guess…

Nikki Sixx's Royal Underground

These days it seems you can't leave your house without bumping into another celebrity launching their own brand of jeans. This week's celeb denim designer is Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue who with Kelly Gray of the St. John Clothing Line has just launched Royal Underground. Apparently this new brand is attempting to produce high end men's clothing with a distinctive rock star vibe. At the moment it's not possible to say whether the jeans are any good as the Royal Underground website takes the novel approach of having loads of soft focus shots of the designers rather than the clothes. The jeans will be available at select branches Neiman-Marcus, Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom from this month.

Celebrity Denim - Cameron Diaz / William Rast

If I had to dream up a way of marketing a new denim brand I don't think I could come up with anything as perfect as William Rast denim designed by Justin Timberlake and worn by his Hollywood superstar girlfriend Cameron Diaz (seen here in a pair of Sadie 16" Straight Leg Jeans). I guess the only way to top that would be if Brad Pitt suddenly decided to start making jeans and his other half Angelina wore them in her next movie. Note to any denim manufacturers out there - If you steal this idea I will expect a royalty!

Why Buy Premium Denim?

Premium Denim = Hot Momma

I often get asked what is the difference between premium denim and regular denim and why the does premium denim cost so much. Put simply the difference is the quality of the denim and the cut of the jeans. This could not be more perfectly demonstrated than by these two photos of Brazilian supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio. In the photo above she is wearing a pair of Taverniti So Jeans which cost $200 and which make her look a million dollars. In the photo below she is show wearing a pair of Victoria's Secret Jeans which cost $90 and which manage the astonishing feat of making her look almost ordinary. I don't think any more proof is required of the value of a good pair of jeans.
