Denim Advice - Jeans For Pear Shapes

jc1.jpg
Q) Dear Donna, Hi im 5"3 and weigh 10st6lbs, most of which sits on my hips and thighs I find it totally impossible to find jeans that fit especialy on the thighs. Can you recomend any particular makes that i could try? (From Sarah)

A) Although this sounds totally mad, you should actually try some low rise jeans. If you go for something high-waisted, it could cinch you in at the waist too much and draw emphasis to your lovely legs and embrace the thighs a little too lovingly. What I would suggest is a trouser style jean. They're fabulous, and are a great casual look for Summer. J & Company have one called the Robertson Jean (see above) that sits low on the hips, skims over the bum and has a wideish leg ending in a cuff at the bottom. They're great and super flattering. They have the room in the thighs you're looking for and the style will lend you a relaxed air. (Answered by Donna Ida Thornton, owner of Donna Ida Denim Boutique in London)

Found Denim - Vintage Inspired Denim

Found Denim is a brand new denim label created by Sara Watson and Lana Cretz previously of Hudson Jeans and AG Adriano Goldschmeid. This 50s/60s inspired collection is influenced by both the French new wave movement and American motorcycle clubs - think Hells Angels meet Beatnik Poets. To help promote this countercultural image Found have used hip female indie band Au Revoir Simone (see above) to front their first ad campaign.

Gilded Age Men's Premium Denim

h3.jpg
Gilded Age is relatively new men's premium denim label that was founded by Stefan Miljanic who previously held top design positions at Abercrombie, Banana Republic and Calvin Klein. His goal is to create a brand that "combines metropolitan sensibility with East Coast lifestyle" which I think translates to meaning a higher-end version of Abercrombie & Fitch. The is a brand that is influenced by the early 20th century weaving, spinning and dying techniques meaning that the jeans are hand crafted not mass produced. Judging by the look of the jeans, this effort is well spent as they have produced some great natural looking aged denim. Unsurprisingly all the care and attention that is lavished on these jeans means they don't come cheap, prices start at $400 and go up to $700.

Designer Q & A - Radcliffe Denim

sr1.jpg
This week's Designer Q & A is with Suzy Radcliffe, Founder of Radcliffe Denim.

1) Why do you think after 200 years jeans are still one of the most popular items of clothing?

I think Denim is such an iconic and versatile fabric that it can just keep re-inventing itself. At least every decade it is used in a totally different way - just think 10 years ago the concept of premium denim did not even exist.

2) Last time I counted there were over 50 brands of premium denim jeans, what makes your jeans stand out from the rest?

Many jeans brands are approaching denim in a traditional 'california lifestyle' approach. I was bored and tired of endless blue, boot cut jeans and wanted something different - something more refined. Being British, Radcliffe comes at Denim from a totally different perspective. Our background is in traditional Savile Row tailoring - so while we are obsessed with denim we use it in a very unexpected way - for instance our Denim Trafalgar trench coat is a very traditional tailored coat but cut in one of the most innovative denims it is transformed into something very contemporary

3) Who do you imagine is a typical customer?

Radcliffe is for a very modern woman, who is very confident in her style. She appreciates luxury and impeccable fitting clothes - but loves the energy and attitude of denim.
