This week we are starting a regular new feature where we interview the people behind some of the biggest denim retailers. We start with Catherine Chow, Founder of one of the web's best fashion-forward stores Tobi.com.

1) Why do you think is it that after 200 years jeans are still one of the most popular items of clothing?
Denim is an amazing and sustainable fabric. From work wear to fashion, denim is a casual way to really express individual style. Denim also has unique characteristics that change in time and become personal with wear.

2) Denim retail is a competitive business, how do you ensure that your shop stands apart from the rest?
We look for quality, fit, and style. We recognize that some styles are a trend but core fits are a staple for denim lovers. We provide excellent product knowledge and help our customers get into the right denim for them.

3) With hundreds of denim brands to choose from how do you decide which to stock?
Again, we look for important elements in a denim line. Consistency with fit and quality is important to us. We stand behind our product and want our customers to love their jeans. We pay close attention to our market and their demands. We take the suggestions of customers and combine them with our knowledge of the denim world.

4) What are your top 3 best selling brands/styles?
APC, Nudie, and Cheap Monday!

5) Which are your favorite pair of jeans that you are selling right now?
Ksubi skinny zip ups! Love them!

6) Which style(s) of jeans are a must for every woman's wardrobe?
A nice straight leg is a must. The straight leg cut compliments most women's figure and chic dark denim is classic and sexy.

7) How does your shop best help the customer find their perfect pair of jeans?
All of our Stylists have a genuine passion for denim. The excitement and knowledge of fits and brands help us to get our customers into what they are looking for based on their body types, style, and budget!

8) Any tips for how to best look after your favourite pair of jeans?
Our #1 suggestion is to wash them as little as possible. Like most things, moderation is the key! Wash them in cold and hang them to dry when you do wash them.

9) How long has the company been running and what made you get into fashion retail?
Azalea (see above) is 6 and tobi is now 2! Corina and I both have a strong interest in fashion and really wanted to create a business that would be built on passion and our love for clothing and serving people.

10) 2009 is a difficult time for everyone involved retail what do you think you biggest challenges will be this year?
The tough economic times are impossible to escape. Our consumers will inevitably be cutting back on their spending.

11) What are your thoughts on the increasing number of celebrities designing their own lines of denim?
I think it's great that they are able to use their exposure to extend their style and branding through fashion. As long as really great product is being produced I'm OK with it!

12) Who's denim style inspires you the most?
Jbrand makes a great skinny. I love Paige for my everyday jeans, and I am inspired by designers working well with raw denim. Finding a raw fabric that is still a cute and comfortable fit for women is especially tough.

13) What is the worst denim crime?
No back pockets is just no good! Not even for the best backside!

14) Which denim trend(s) are going to be big in 2009?
Skinny is here to stay! We see the trend toward light and ripped jeans for 2009... The biggest trend for me is to always find styles that best compliment my curvy body.
