Designer Q & A - Jennifer Herrema

Few people can take who they are and translate that into fashion without losing their integrity trying to appeal to the masses. When Jennifer Herrema and Volcom got together to collaborate it was a match made in heaven. The rocker chick shared her thoughts on denim and has become my new email friend. I can't wait to go to an upcoming Volcom event in L.A. and meet her in person. She's a strong kick-ass woman with a cult following, great sense of humor and has put forth a denim line with Volcom that is a reflection of all that she is. 1). Why do you think after 200 years jeans are still one of the most popular items of clothing?

Because they are so classic, utilitarian,versatile,unisex, and acceptable.

2). Who do you imagine is a typical customer?

Haaaaa.....people (men and women) with Great taste who are savvy enough to know that purchasing the Volcom brand over newer and most likely short lived trendy denim "fashion" lines is a cool utilitarian and timeless choice.

3). Where do you get your inspiration from?

Arts and crafts and my own style that evolved out of necessity

4). Which style and wash of your jeans are flying out of the shops the quickest at the moment?

I was just told that the dep jeans and shorts and the black lace up slingshot jeans are all sold through.....very exciting

5). Are there any essential jeans that everyone should have in their wardrobe?

American made Levi's.

6). What are the first pair of jeans you remember?

Sears Toughskins!!! My mom bought me a plaid pair that had hot pink in the plaid....I was obsessed.

7). What have been your favourite pair of jeans that you have owned and why?

Vintage Levi's 646's with a 36" inseam! I took them in perfectly to fit like a glove and the denim is so awesome that the natural fading is killer and sturdy enough to withstand years of patching so they're still going strong.

8). What have been your favourite pair of jeans that you have produced and why?

I just started sooooo......I love them all ;)

9). How many pairs of jeans do you currently own and which are your favorites?

Probably about 100 pairs... I never get rid of jeans. I've been wearing my JJ limited edition jeans every day... They are def my favs right now... I LOVE them.

10). Are you a "wash your jeans after each wear" person or a "wear your jeans for six months before you wash them" person?

I only wash them when they start to smell funky and with fabreze it's probably only a couple times a year :p

11). Do you own jeans for different occasions (for instance I have work jeans, smart jeans, weekend jeans, holiday jeans, jeans for going to concerts in, jeans) if so what have you got?

I have all types of jeans but I tend to wear clean dark denim either wide leg (chloe) or skinny (hysteric glamour) for more formal occasions.

12). Which celebs are currently wearing your jeans?

Most of the styles have not been released yet but I got a few friends wearing them Lizzy Jagger and Andrew Vanwyngarden (MGMT) :)

13). Which person living or dead would you most like to see in a pair of your jeans?

Eazy E

14). What is the worst denim crime?

Stay pressed polyester jeans...hate those.

15). If jeans had not been invented, what would we all be wearing?

Leather.

16). And finally, any predictions for denim in 2011?

Super long inseams with a slight boot flare that covers the foot... I'm into it.
