Matt Style - PRPS Raw Barracuda Denim
Now I firstly have to say a huge thank you to Helen at IPR for lending me one of the modern denim industry's most beautiful pairs of raw selvage denim jeans to review. If you remember, a little while back I got hold of a pair of the 'Dirty vintage wash Barracuda' jeans from PRPS. This week's pair are the unwashed, premium raw selvage alternative, my dream jeans.
Before I even start to describe how immaculate they are, let's indulge ourselves in a little education on how they turn from a plant to the jeans photographed here. The cotton is grown and harvested in Africa, collected from local farmers and transported to Japan where is it woven on vintage looms by premium denim artisans. Unlike more conventional denim manufactures, PRPS neglect seasonal trends to invest in timeless quality and heritage.
The raw selvage Barracudas are my personal favourite. Firstly because of the incredible quality, the perfect fit and the hallmark PRPS custom purple selvage denim that is unlike anything else on the market. The second winning factor is that they're raw and unwashed, allowing me to leave my own unique impression upon them. Barracudas are a straight leg fit with a 7.5" leg opening and 33" inside leg, however, depending on how you wash them (washing raw denim?!?!) you'll be expecting those numbers to shrink slightly. I'm wearing a 34" waist and it's a snug and slim fit all the way to the lower calf.
The fly buttons are simply my favourite part, coming in bronze, silver, purple, gold and black. I have to also mention the hidden rear pocket rivets which are becoming a rare feature on jeans these days. Contrast stitching, dark camouflage pocket lining, black satin PRPS embossed rivets and the signature stitched purple tab are all just more icing on the cake.
For me, the fit is perfect. However, if you have thick thighs or like the waist to have a fair amount of give, maybe size up. I'm totally aware that the jeans will stretch and shape over time, so it may just be a case of having a little patience whilst the denim becomes less rigid and more comfortable.
I also did a comparison of the indigo colour of the denim alongside some other brands' raw denim jeans and I'd say it is a richer colour with a glossy sheen (typical of Japanese manufacture) that looks to be more on the blue side of the spectrum (like many European brands).
Last week my favourite year old (and only washed once....in the sea) raw selvage jeans experienced the bane of my life - a crotch blowout. So tonight I'll be administrating some TLC with a needle and thread before letting them retire to the subs bench. I'm convinced that the PRPS Barracudas will be a worthy replacement and a less smelly option. I'm joking, my last pair didn't actually smell, despite never have seen the inside of a washing machine.
The Prps Raw Barracuda Jeans reviewed here are available online for £214.
