4 Denim Maxi Skirts For Spring/Summer 2011

I've always thought of long denim skirts as a passed trend from early 90's grunge scene, inspired by the 70's Flower Power movement and a logical fashion statement for elementary school teachers. Apparently the fashion gods have decided that denim maxi's are cool again (take note of the 20 year mark) and we need to bring them back out of father time's fashion closet. This 2011 Spring/Summer season has been deemed the year of the maxi skirt. You can make these floor length skirts work for you by wear them with a body-con tank, braided belt, add a light denim jacket and wedge sandals or pair a leotard/bodysuit with a slouchy lightweight knit cardigan and boots.

Rachel Bilson Makes A Denim Suggestion Again!

-rachel-bilson-citizens-of-humanity-jeans-jt1.jpg

Rachel Bilson was recently asked by InStyle Magazine what pieces would be in her wardrobe if it could consist of only five items. She told InStyle, "A basic white T (mine are from the brand Market). A blazer, perhaps a boys one from Brooks Brothers. A go-to black dress (we recommend the one from Paige Black label - so perfect). And a really good neutral sweater and I'd have a fantastic pair of flattering skinny jeans, like Citizens of Humanity's stretch ones."

The jeans Rachel is mentioning are her fabulous Citizen's of Humanity Slick Legging Jeans which she has worn time and again. They are my personal favorite skinny jeans.

Rachel Bilson was asked by an InStyle reader where she gets her jeans. Rachel responded, "I have a hard time with hems-so frustrating. Siwy makes cropped jeans styles that are the perfect length for us shorties, and so does Paige."

Madewell's Easy Denim Styling Tricks

Lucky editors Elise Loehnen and Jenny Kang tell three of their absolute favorite ways to instantly (and easily!) update your denim looks!

madewell-denim-on-denim-thumb-460x600-69673.jpg
1. Denim on Denim: This is one of our favorite looks for fall, and it's so easy to do. Just follow one simple rule: Mix up your blues. For example, we love the subtle contrast of a lighter-wash chambray shirt worn with darker indigo jeans. Also, don't be afraid to pair a faded jean jacket with dark, sleek skinny jeans--we love the cool contrast.

CASUALLY CUFFED-madewell-thumb-460x613-69675.jpg
2. Casually Cuffed: For a quick denim fix--and an authentically borrowed-from-your-boyfriend look--loosely roll and cuff a pair of straight-leg jeans right at the ankle or just an inch above. If skinny is your jean of choice, roll the cuff about four inches above the ankle and finish the look with cute socks and ankle boots. Same jeans, new style--and yes, people notice.

PLAY WITH PROPORTION-madewell-thumb-460x613-69676.jpg
3. Play with Proportion: We're in love with this season's crop of slouchy trouser jeans. They look great on everyone, but the key to making them feel feminine and modern is to contrast the jeans' comfy silhouette by pairing them with sleek ankle booties--preferably in a bold color. They balance out the look and add a dose of sleek femininity. (Source: LuckyMag)
