3Sixteen Denim Series

Self Edge is proud to announce their newest addition to their denim styles with 3Sixteen. Headquartered in New York City's Lower East Side, the brand is starting with three denim models and a few bracelet styles, the collection is handsewn with the finest fabrics, ensuring that every piece has a compelling story to tell.

Beyond the garments, the guys behind the label and their vision of the future we also love; this is why Self Edge has chosen to bring a rare non-Japanese brand into their mix of labels. The first offerings from 3Sixteen come in the form of two jean silhouettes and a set of leather bracelets produced by Tanner Goods.

The SL-100x jean is a straight leg cut made of selvedge indigo denim from Japan's famous Kaihara Mill complete with custom rivets, a thick leather tag from Tanner Goods, and chainstitched hems. The ST-100x is a slim cut jean with a small leg opening to please those looking for a slim jean that's got a form fitting silhouette, also made of Kaihara's denim. The slim tapered cut is also available with black resin coated denim from Cone Mills (ST-210). Also available are leather bracelets available in two styles in black or tan leather. These were produced in Oregon by Tanner Goods out of a sturdy thick English Bridle leather.

All three denim models and bracelets are available now in Self Edge's online store.

Need Supply Co.

Nylon Magazine named them one of the Top 100 best denim stores in the world - they are NeedSupply. They opened in 1996 with just vintage Levi's in 250 square feet of space. Later expanding into other special vintage items and eventually adding new denim, they now sell most of the major premium denim brands like Citizens of Humanity, J Brand and Current/Elliott as well as the more forward brands such as Acne, Ksubi, and Nudie. They also carry raw denim from brands like Nudie, APC, Levi's and Kicking Mule Workshop. I love their mix of items! Check out some top selections from NeedSupply below. Their brick and mortar store is in Richmond, VA, but you can also shop online at NeedSupply.com.

Onvis True Stories and Blue Virgin Denim

Ginotonico_model_low.jpg

ONVIS is an Italian denim brand that goes beyond a classical consumer brand approach. ONVIS is literally living through its wearers. By offering people raw denim jeans - 'Blue Virgins' - and asking them to live in their products everyday by (ab)using them as much as possible. Once daily life has left its traces on the denim, ONVIS encourages the wearers to send back their pair of worn-out jeans and ONVIS replicates the pattern for a possible next limited edition of the so called 'True Stories' collection. If your jeans are selected to be the next style created, you will earn royalties of up to 5,000 Euros! Both the raw jeans and the re-created distressed and worn in True Stories versions are for sale on their website and they ship worldwide. Be sure to check out the true stories behind those who inspired these styles below, including a music producer and DJ, a young architect, a photographer in San Francisco, and a designer from London. What will your true story be?

RMC - Dream of the Fisherman's Wife Jeans

octopus multy colour jeans1.jpgclick to enlarge, but be warned - it's weird

Remember a while back I wrote about a limited edition pair of jeans by Red Monkey Company featuring some bizarre Japanese erotica? Back then I didn't have a proper photo of the jeans, but finally I have received the above shot and, yes, the jeans are just are weird as they sounded. The back pockets featured some pretty explicit images of what wikipedia calls tentacle eroticism. It's just as well these jeans are limited edition because I can't imagine there are many people out there that would actually wear them.

howies Hemp Jeans: Beautifully Imperfect Denim

IMG_5890.jpg

The real green jean story: These howies jeans are woven using a pre-1920's style 'green-caste' denim. An old style of jean which was popular before the more traditional blue indigo dye came into use. They mix their organic cotton denim with hemp fibres to make a selvedge jean with a unique look and feel. The greyish green tone comes from the leaves and stems of the indigo plant which are used to make the dye. The dye takes to the hemp fibres of the weave differently to the way it takes to the cotton fibres, giving the jean an uneven, streaky appearance.

Hemp crops are easily sustainable and, unlike cotton, cultivating and processing hemp requires a lot less water. In fact, a jean like this made from 40% hemp and 60% cotton (as opposed to 100% cotton), saves up to 2,400 litres of water, that's enough to give one person clean drinking water for two years! Indeed, neither does hemp require the use of huge amounts of pesticides and herbicides which are used to grow cotton, as it is naturally antibacterial. It is also amongst the strongest natural fibres known to man. So when woven into fabrics it makes for pretty durable clothing and, when mixed with other fabrics, becomes incredibly soft. It has exceptional insulation and cooling properties too. Howies hemp jeans are available on their website for men and women, and they are offering a free Wabi-Sabi (beautifully imperfect) limited edition t-shirt with every Hemp jean purchased until May 1st. The shirt comes in men's and women's sizes. The offer is running online and instore at Bristol and London, and the shirt is based on the Hokusai's wave and the Japanese philosophical viewpoint that "nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect."
