G-Star launches the RAW Tailored Atelier
When G-Star first "road-tested" their concept of having an atelier added to their stores here in the US, I was able to check it out and absolutely loved the idea. I am delighted that they are now actually implanting this atelier in their stores in New York and Los Angeles.
- "The RAW Tailored Ateliers will be located in New York - Union Square and Los Angeles - Melrose and Rodeo Drive, launching today, March 5th, 2013. The RAW Tailored Atelier is an in-store denim customization service that allows customers to work one on one with a G-Star professional to select and tailor their jeans to the perfect fit! The result will allow one to showcase their sartorial taste and uncompromisable style.
The G-Star RAW Tailored Atelier will be offering the 3301 classic five pocket jean for customization. The 3301 style is a straight fit for men while the women's version is slim fit. At the atelier, a professional G-Star tailor will be on-hand to measure customers and advise on correct size and inseams which will then be tailored to the customer's preference. The customer will have the opportunity to choose the final details of buttons, rivets, and back label, giving the denim a range of effects from vintage to modern or anything in between. Finally, the denim will be shipped in an exclusive RAW Tailored Atelier canvas bag." -
Donwan Harrell - Mr. PRPS, The Artist
I have known Donwan Harrell, founder and creator of the famous PRPS brand, for a few years now. Every once in a while we get together and have our denim talks. I have known Don, the creator of jeans, Don the collector of vintage Levi's and Wranglers, and Don the passionate about cars and garages.
So actually, it was no surprise for me when I got to know yet another side of this multifaceted supertalented Don - the artist. I feel especially flattered that he chose me to be the first person ever to show and talk to about his designs.
It is not that he does his designs on raw denim with an antique quilt pen only (last image below), but he also designs stories on army jackets that he collects from Vietnam veterans.
The designs on the jackets are based on the story each of the veterans tells Donwan. Isn't it amazing how he does that - can you imagine the hours he spends with each of these awesome guys to listen to their (horror) stories and then re-create their anxieties, their traumas and their fears and transform them into beautiful and absolutely mind blowing designs? Designs that make you re-think the whole story about war and what a waste all of this is.....but let's not dwell too much on this depressing subject.
There are only a few of each item, as Don only works on them from his home on weekends, but I am hoping he will have the occasion to do many more.
We, at Denimology, are truly impressed with Donwan, the guy behind PRPS as well as with Donwan the "Mystery Man" full of surprises! :-)
Replay - Denim Handbags for Summer 2013
Replay is launching some very cute denim handbags for next summer. I remember this kind of handbag used to be quite popular in the 80's or 90's - I know my mom had one and I was spending so much time thinking of how I could convince her to give it to me LOL! She ended up giving it to me when the bag got pretty worn out and faded and I LOVED it! I loved it even better than when it was new!
Now, I know for a fact that our editor, Jessie, has been experimenting with DIY bags just like these. Wonder if she will add some of her creations to this post - Jessie please :-)!
